The Master Gardener Program

The Master Gardener ProgramThe Master Gardener Program was designed to use the services of trained volunteers who have horticultural knowledge and a willingness to share that knowledge with county residents.

Putnam County has an active Master Gardener organization that meets quarterly to discuss Master Gardener projects, receive training and complete the business of the organization.

This webpage will be devoted to the major community service projects that are being worked on or sponsored by the Master Gardener Association.

The readers of this webpage are invited to go to those project sites to see the improvements that have been made.  Redesign, mulching, pruning, and plant arrangement are some of the factors deserving special attention.

Master Gardener Projects:

1.  Valley Park - The area around the museum has been renovated - re-mulched, shrub pruning, plant rearranging, and some new flowers.

2.  Putnam County Library - The flower bed around the Putnam County Library at Putnam Village has been completely redone.

3.  Teays Valley Manor -  A working plan has been drawn up to show how the landscaping will look after it has been completely attended.  This work is just getting started.  People with lawn questions could look at all these projects to gain ideas for their individual locations.

4.  The Community Garden is a project where vegetables are grown.  These vegetables are given to the community food cupboard.  The garden is located at St. Timothy Episcopal Church in Teays Valley.

In addition to these three major projects, there are some smaller projects being completed in other areas of the county.

How does the work for these projects get accomplished?  Each project has a Master Gardener leader who organizes the work schedules, securing materials (most donated), planning the project, and coordinating the work effort.  Several Master Gardeners assist with all phases of each project.  Other community groups are invited to provide materials and/or work on the project that is being worked on at a certain time.

Putnam County citizens can take pride in the excellent work that the Master Gardeners are doing to improve the beauty of Putnam County communities.

If you are a Putnam County resident that is interested in taking the Master Gardener Certification Course, please call 586-0217 for information or an application.
